The omnivorous predator Macrolophus pygmaeus induces production of plant volatiles that attract a specialist predator

چکیده
It has become clear that omnivorous predators can induce plant defences affect the performance and host choice of herbivores. They are also known to production volatiles behaviour herbivores searching for plants. These may other predators, which was investigated here. The predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis preferred plants previously exposed mirid Macrolophus pygmaeus over clean mites were equally attracted omnivore subsequently infested by spider (Tetranychus urticae, prey omnivore) with alone. Moreover, more than but not omnivore. significantly on omnivores still present. Experience from without resulted in a loss preference emitted Analysis showed exposure induced qualitative quantitative changes volatile blend. Together, these results suggest interfere predators. consequences such interference biological pest control remain be investigated.

Lethal and behavioral effects of pesticides on the insect predator Macrolophus pygmaeus.
Macrolophus pygmaeus (Hemiptera: Miridae) is a common generalist predator in Mediterranean agro-ecosystems. We evaluated the lethal effects of six insecticides and a fungicide on M. pygmaeus nymphs exposed to the pesticides through three routes of exposure: direct, residual and oral. Chlorantraniliprole and emamectin-benzoate caused less than 25% mortality to M. pygmaeus and were classified as ...

A study was conducted to examine the influence of the hunger level on the prey consumption of Macrolophus pygmaeus Rambur (Hemiptera Miridae) at varying densities of Myzus persicae Sulzer (Hemiptera Aphididae) through laboratory functional response experiments. Newly emerged adult females of the predator were subjected to 24 or 48 h of prey deprivation on pepper plant, as well as to 48 h only o...
متن کاملEffect of plant nitrogen and water status on the foraging behavior and fitness of an omnivorous arthropod
Omnivorous arthropods make dietary choices according to the environment in which they forage, mainly availability/quality of plant and/or prey resources. Such decisions and their subsequent impacts on life-history traits may be affected by the availability of nutrients and water to plants, that is, through bottom-up forces. By setting up arenas for feeding behavior observation as well as glassh...
متن کاملSurvival of a specialist natural enemy experiencing resource competition with an omnivorous predator when sharing the invasive prey Tuta absoluta
Can specialist natural enemies persist in ecosystems when competing with omnivorous natural enemies for their shared prey? The consequences of omnivory have been studied theoretically, but empirical studies are still lacking. Omnivory is nevertheless common in nature and omnivorous predators coexist with specialists in many ecosystems, even when they are intraguild predators. This type of assoc...

Omnivorous Heteroptera constitute an important component of predatory guilds with high potential for biological control. Understanding the relative effects of plant feeding on the suppression of prey by omnivores could be an important element for improving biological control strategies. In the current paper, the effects of different plant food sources on the predation rate of the omnivorous pre...
